Established at our present location in
the Five Points Neighborhood in December 1983, Inner
City Health Center has been providing quality medical
and dental care for the poor and uninsured for 20 years.
Inner City Health Center was founded by two physicians;
Dr. Bob Williams, Dr. Duane Claassen and a counselor;
Jan Williams who had a heart for the medically indigent
of Denver and wanted to address those health care needs.
To keep overhead costs low, Inner City Health Center
focuses on being a volunteer driven organization. A
majority of the clinical staff (all but one of the physicians
and two of the dentists as well as approximately 90%
of the nurses and 66% of the counselors) are volunteers
committed to the goal of providing continuity of quality
care to anyone in need in an atmosphere of respect and
dignity. Volunteers also assist in non-clinical roles
including computer specialists, marketing, graphic design,
gardening, repair and renovation, and office and records
management.
Approximately 59% of our patients are uninsured and
34% are Medicare/Medicaid recipients. The uninsured
are charged on a sliding-fee scale based upon their
income and ability to pay. This payment is usually insufficient
to pay for the costs of the care received; however,
such payment allows the individuals to retain a measure
of their self-respect and participate in their care.
Inner City Health Center attempts to offer a hand up
rather than a hand out.
